The world is changing.

But most people are still playing by the old rules.

They’re playing by the rules of a system that was designed for a reality that hardly exists anymore.

In the old system, manufacturing industries reigned supreme. Productivity could be measured in units of time (100 widgets per hour, etc), and with few exceptions, an employee’s labor was largely commoditized.

An hour of making widgets, is an hour of making widgets, no matter who’s making them.

It was nearly impossible for a worker to differentiate themselves, thus they had no choice but to be a cog in the system, unless they found the capital and other means to buy their freedom.

But today’s economy is different. Most workers do not make widgets.

They provide value to organizations through accumulated knowledge, rather than their time.

You are selling your expertise, your experiences, and your unique perspectives to lead, to execute, and to inform highly-consequential decisions.

Yet, the corporate world still largely compensates you for your time spent working.

The average employee at a director level or above works about 55 hours per week, not including time preparing for work and commuting to the job.

In this new age where value is decoupled from time, there is a wave of pioneering individuals who understand that trading hours of their day for a paycheck is no longer the optimal strategy.

They are proactively moving into the new system of trading knowledge for money, while regaining their time-freedom.

Your knowledge is now an asset that, if packaged correctly, can be leveraged for financial gain irrespective of time.

The amount of effort that goes into being a corporate employee (performance reviews, job applications, networking) could be redirected into productizing a skillset and that unlocks solo-entrepreneurship.

The result of this?

You have more time to enjoy life, focus on health and family, travel, work on personal hobbies and challenges, or whatever else it is that brings you genuine fulfillment.

What does it mean to productize yourself?

You have a 1 in 8 billion perspective on life.

While the individual experiences and pieces of knowledge that you hold may not be significant on their own, when combined, they create a unique and inimitable lens through which you process the world.

Let’s call this combination of skills and lived experiences your “Unique Value Proposition” (UVP).

Your UVP is the product. It is what people will pay for, IF and only if you package it correctly.

This requires a combination of focus, positioning, and storytelling that if done strategically, opens the floodgates of people and organizations who are happy to compensate you for the value you’re uniquely qualified to provide, irrespective of time.

Unfortunately, this is where many highly-skilled professionals fall short.

While people continue to invest a massive portion of their lives into showing up to work in the old system, very few are learning how to productize their UVP independent of the system.

They’re still playing by the old rules.

So hear me out when I say this….

The longer you spend not knowing how to define your UVP, decouple your skills from salaried work, and productize your knowledge, the longer you’ll spend trapped by the golden handcuffs, still operating as a cog in the old system.
